Advancing literacy one person at a time
Think about what your life would be like if you couldn’t read to your children, fill out an application form, follow the directions on a bottle of medicine or find your doctor’s number in the phone book.
Nearly one of every five adults in Chatham County is struggling with those kinds of issues – either because they lack the necessary reading and writing skills or because they don’t understand English. As a result, many can’t find jobs, aren’t able to vote, can’t help their children with homework, and are self-conscious and embarrassed about their literacy problems.
The Chatham County Literacy Council can help. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) agency, we provide free one-on-one and small-group tutoring for adults in:
* ABE (Adult Basic Education), which includes reading, writing and math;
* GED (high school equivalency) preparation;
* ESL (English as a Second Language) learning;
* Citizenship preparation.
To help ensure our students’ success, we identify their personal goals, assess their skill levels and instructional needs, match them with skilled tutors and monitor their progress.
We offer tutoring at locations across the county. For more information on our programs, click here. If you or someone you know would like to make an appointment for an assessment, contact us at admin@chathamliteracy.org or at 919-742-0578.
